WiseGuys Moving began in 2017 in Centennial, Colorado. Its founder, Cory Wise, started it at the age of 26. Cory worked with a simple moving service throughout his 4 years of college at UT-Knoxville. This service was one of the first to coin the term "Uber for Movers" and was a wonderful opportunity to use moving as a side hustle to earn an honest, relatively good income at one's own discretion. This allowed Cory to juggle a full-time student schedule and other part-time jobs while claiming moves to bring in that extra, high hourly income. But there were issues...
Why do we do what we do?
We're striving to succeed in this world, and we'll be straightforward about it. We've identified a specific demand that we can address, and in doing so, we expect fair compensation. It's a straightforward goal. If we can meet this demand while delivering exceptional care and service, we can establish a thriving business that offers opportunities to its members. These opportunities can grant them the option to work less and live more, if they desire.
We're weary of the grind of overwork and underpayment, where our hard work enriches others while we receive less in return. I used to work for a moving company that treated us as expendable and gave us the lowest pay, despite the fact that the physical labor we performed generated the revenue. I reject that notion. I believe the labor that generates income is the most valuable aspect. The office staff handling marketing, estimates, and sales are undoubtedly valuable, but their efforts wouldn't matter without hardworking individuals to handle the physical tasks involved in moving.
After working with this company for four years, I realized that I was only truly valued during the initial years. As they expanded, I sensed that I had become replaceable, and my well-being was no longer a concern to them. So, I decided to move on...
I founded WiseGuys Moving to create opportunities for people to earn an honest wage by providing high-quality service on their own schedules. Opportunities that serve the community by solving the moving headache.
We're not trying to deceive anyone or persuade them to buy unnecessary products. We aim to solve a problem and help people complete essential tasks, at a rate they can afford. Much like mowing the lawn, doing the dishes, maintaining a car, handling electrical wiring, or plumbing, these are chores that no one truly enjoys but must be done. As a business, we aim to be profitable while offering these necessary services.
Moving is more complex than it initially appears. There's a common misconception that any two strong individuals can handle it. I started in the moving business because I thought it was that simple. I believed all I needed were my muscles and a partner. I thought I could show up and work diligently for people. However, I soon learned that was only half of the equation.
To consistently deliver high-quality moving services, we need a dependable, small crew, a network of reliable subcontractors, and thousands of dollars' worth of equipment. It's also beneficial to have our box trucks, partner with software companies for scheduling and invoicing, and maintain relationships with insurance providers. Beyond that, we must focus on managing customer expectations, which involves navigating a multitude of variables. Some customers seek budget-friendly services, while others have highly valuable items and request full insurance coverage. Some need a truck, while others only require labor. Some have intricate pathways to navigate, while others need disassembly and reassembly services. The list of variables goes on and on.

About our Owner Corey
After six years, I've become quite proficient in the realm of management, and I've honed my ability to educate individuals on navigating complex relocation scenarios. I've overseen scheduling, managed human resources, and acquired an extensive knowledge of the moving process, perhaps a bit more than I bargained for 😅. I'm the person you reach out to when you need to maneuver a Heavy Art table with non-detachable arms into a room, figuring out the precise eight 1/4 turns required. I'm also the individual who willingly invests an hour or two, or maybe even three, carefully disassembling and reassembling it in its new permanent abode, all while aiming for a damage-free outcome (well, most of the time 😅).
Physically, I'm capable of single-handedly tackling the logistics of a typical 2-bedroom apartment within a day. Of course, every apartment presents its unique challenges, but stairs, while they might slow me down, won't hinder my progress. However, I find myself less inclined to engage in such strenuous tasks nowadays. I'd rather allocate my time to my beloved family and friends, pursuing participation in various community groups like juijizu, parkour, or rock climbing. My aspiration is to have both the time and resources to explore extraordinary destinations, even though I haven't quite reached that point yet. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to what the future holds, appreciating the precious moments I share with my family, cherishing the physical nature of my work, and taking pride in my accomplishments.
What it’s like Working as a WiseGuy.
At WiseGuys, we firmly believe in granting autonomy to our team members. While some employees dedicate significant time to our business, the rest of our crew have the flexibility to select the jobs they prefer. They can choose to participate in any, all, or none of the available jobs. We even accommodate partial days or partial job commitments when arranged in advance with our management. Ultimately, we want our movers to have the power to decide when and if they work, taking ownership of their time management and performance. We hold our movers to high standards and expect our members to take responsibility for any errors they may make. While we encourage our workers to be themselves, professionalism is a must when interacting with everyone on the job. WiseGuys consistently strives to assemble a skilled crew tailored to the specific requirements of each job.
We employ a tier system that rewards movers who contribute greater value with a stronger work ethic by offering higher hourly rates compared to those who put in minimal effort. Although we welcome all types of movers who meet our minimum standards, only those who actively enhance job performance will have the opportunity to earn more. All our movers start at our base rate and can progress to earning much more per hour for managing individual jobs. We also provide opportunities for long-term partnerships and offer the potential to earn tips and bonuses for exceptional performance.
Currently, our movers make between $25-$40/Hr
Our setup primarily involves subcontractors who operate on an individual basis. However, at WiseGuys, we foster a sense of teamwork and camaraderie. We initiate and conclude our jobs with brief team meetings to enhance efficiency, exchange ideas, and reflect on what went well and where improvements can be made for each task. We value our movers and acknowledge their contributions, especially when they proactively find solutions to any challenges that may arise during jobs. Additionally, as we continue to expand, we plan to host more events outside of moving, allowing our crew members to build connections while enjoying some leisure time together. For instance, we hold an annual field game day featuring activities like flag football, ultimate frisbee, cornhole, and more.
